A New Direction: Moving From Editorial Photography to Real Estate Photography

A New Direction: Moving From Editorial Photography to Real Estate Photography

July 15 — After a lot of thought (and more than a few cups of coffee), I’ve decided it’s time to take my photography business in a new direction. For decades, I’ve been shooting editorial work, news, and features — long before digital cameras, Lightroom, or anything “AI‑powered” existed. I was regularly photographing and publishing news and feature photos before 1987, back when everything involved film, chemicals, and long nights in the darkroom. I left corporate America that same year, and photography has been my full‑time world ever since.

Editorial photography has been good to me. It’s taken me everywhere, and my images have appeared across major agencies like Getty, Shutterstock, Adobe Stock, Dreamstime, and Alamy News. But the industry has changed — dramatically.

Why I’m Shifting Away From Editorial Work

The editorial market isn’t what it used to be. Publications aren’t buying the way they once did, and agencies have shifted their priorities. And then there’s AI — generating endless images, flooding stock libraries, and cutting into sales for photographers everywhere.

The demand for traditional editorial imagery has dried up, and stock photography revenue has taken a hit across the board.

But here’s the important part: I’m not ready to retire.

I still love photography. I still love creating. I still love telling stories. I just needed a new direction — one where my experience still matters and where the work is valued.

That’s what led me to real estate photography.

What’s Coming in Phase 1

Phase 1 is all about building the foundation for this new chapter. Nothing is “finished” yet — this is the roadmap for what’s coming next.

Website Build‑Out

The website is in its early stage, and Phase 1 will include:

  • adding portfolio images as weather allows
  • adding updated photos of me
  • creating clean service pages
  • refining the layout and navigation
  • building a simple, fast workflow for clients

The site will evolve steadily as I add real estate content and shape the brand.

Re‑Establishing Social Media

My social media accounts are getting a fresh start. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be:

  • updating profiles
  • aligning everything with the real estate focus
  • posting behind‑the‑scenes content
  • sharing property shoots and drone footage
  • reconnecting with local audiences

Social media will become a key part of my marketing strategy.

Developing a Fast Delivery Workflow

One of my main goals is to deliver finished images quickly online. Phase 1 includes:

  • building a streamlined delivery system
  • creating a simple client experience
  • ensuring agents get their images fast and without hassle

Speed and clarity will be part of the brand.

Marketing + Client Outreach

Phase 1 also includes laying the groundwork for future marketing:

  • SEO‑focused blog posts (starting with this one)
  • updating my Google Business Profile
  • planning outreach to local agents and businesses
  • building visibility in York, Adams County, and Northern Baltimore County

This is all about establishing a presence before the portfolio goes live.

Why Real Estate Photography Fits My Future

Real estate photography still lets me tell stories — just in a different way. Instead of capturing moments, I’m capturing spaces. Instead of documenting events, I’m helping people make decisions about homes, businesses, and investments.

It’s local. It’s meaningful. And it’s something I can grow intentionally.

I’m rooted right here in York, Adams County, and Northern Baltimore County, and this new direction lets me serve the people in my own community.

A New Chapter — Not an Ending

This isn’t me winding down. This isn’t retirement. This is simply the next evolution of a career that started in the film and darkroom days.

I’m still a storyteller. I’m still creating images that matter. I’m still building something new.

Phase 1 is just the beginning — and I’m looking forward to everything that comes next.
